چکیده

Allergic reactions to betalactams are the most common cause of adverse drug reactions mediated by specific immunological mechanisms. Reactions may be induced by all betalactams currently available, ranging from benzylpenicillin (BP) to other more recently introduced betalactams, such as aztreonam or the related betalactamase-inhibitor clavulanic acid (Fig. 1) (1–5). Although the production process of betalactams has improved over the years, the number of reactions has not decreased, M. J. Torres, M. Blanca, J. Fernandez, A. Romano, A. de Weck, W. Aberer, K. Beta-lactam and CMV induced drug hypersensitivity syndrome

Beta-lactam antibiotics are one of the most common causes of drug allergic reactions. These reactions may be manifested by a concomitant viral infections caused by HIV, CMV, HHV6 or EBV, especially in children and less common in adults. The aim of our study is to present the case of adult patient with drug hypersensitivity syndrome caused by beta-lactams and manifestation of viral infection. A ...

Allergic reactions to parenteral beta-lactam antibiotics in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Certain antibiotics, particularly piperacillin, have been reported to be associated with a high incidence of allergic reactions in patients with cystic fibrosis. We initiated a study to determine the relative frequency of allergic reactions, ie, drug-induced fever and rash, to parenteral beta-lactam antibiotics in adult patients with cystic fibrosis. Charts of 111 patients were reviewed for eac...

Allergy to beta-lactams in pediatrics: a practical approach.

OBJECTIVE To present a practical approach to the diagnosis and management of allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics. SOURCES Allergy journals indexed in MEDLINE and LILACS, as well as seminal studies and texts. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS Allergy to penicillin is commonly reported. In many cases, this results in the decision not to use this drug. About 10% of drug allergy reports are confirmed. The...

Allergy to b-Lactam Antibiotics in Children

Background. Skin tests with soluble b-lactams can be used to diagnose immediate and delayed hypersensitivity (HS) reactions to b-lactam antibiotics. Very few studies have been performed with children with suspected b-lactam allergy. In these studies, immediate HS to b-lactams was diagnosed by skin tests in 4.9% to 40% of children. The diagnostic and predictive values of immediate responses in s...

Diagnosis of allergy against beta-lactams in primary care: prevalence and diagnostic criteria.

BACKGROUND Secondary care studies showed that a recorded allergy to beta-lactams could not be confirmed by valid allergy testing in >85% of cases. In daily practice, recorded beta-lactam allergies probably cause prescription of secondary choice antibiotics. This overrating of beta-lactam allergy hampers appropriate use of narrow spectrum antibiotic and generates unnecessary cost and bacterial r...

Hypersensitivity reactions to non beta-lactam antimicrobial agents, a statement of the WAO special committee on drug allergy

Antibiotics are used extensively in the treatment of various infections. Consequently, they can be considered among the most important agents involved in adverse reactions to drugs, including both allergic and non-allergic drug hypersensitivity [J Allergy Clin Immunol 113:832-836, 2004]. Most studies published to date deal mainly with reactions to the beta-lactam group, and information on hyper...
